Jim Ross retired from WWE after 20 years with the company on September 11, but it's said this is a just a smoke screen. Ross was actually fired.

Word is WWE characterized Ross's departure as a "retirement" as a public relations move to avoid a major uproar over the firing of a beloved talent and Hall Of Famer. Ross said a couple of weeks ago during his Q&A session in the UK that he had no intention of retiring.

As previously reported by the same source, Ross met with Vince McMahon in Connecticut on September 10 to discuss his departure. Only a handful of people in McMahon's inner circle knew why the meeting was taking place.

Ross is said to have been fired because he was unable to control Ric Flair when he went on a rant during the August 17 WWE 2K14 symposium. The feeling among WWE officials is that Ross should've cut off Flair and regained control of the event. Because Ross failed to do so, there was talk of letting him go "the minute the panel ended."

The comments Flair made at the symposium that got him heat was when he mentioned his son Reid's death and when he joked that John Cena went from not being someone who drank alcohol to downing a six pack of beer every night. In late August, the same source reported that WWE was upset at Flair for saying he couldn't fathom how he was on the same stage with Daniel Bryan, talking about wrestlers drinking too much and referencing wrestling Mick Foley in TNA.
